Short answer
Hermes Agent is Nous Research's free, open-source agent that you host and maintain yourself. Grok Bot is xAI and Cursor's hosted beta, bundled into SuperGrok and Cursor plans, with its own cloud computer per user. Hermes gives control and zero license fees; Grok Bot gives convenience. Neither has confirmed phone answering.
The real question: who runs it
Both products offer an always-on agent with memory and the ability to run unattended. The difference is who carries the operational load. Hermes Agent runs on a machine you control. Grok Bot runs on a cloud computer that xAI and Cursor host for you.
That single difference drives price, privacy, effort and risk. Facts below are as of October 2026.
Side-by-side

When Hermes Agent is the better choice
- You want control. Choose your own model provider and your own host, and see all the code.
- You already run servers. A small VPS or Docker host is a normal weekend for you.
- You need WhatsApp or Signal in the messaging gateway.
- You want to avoid per-seat licenses and are happy to pay for hosting and model use instead.
The cost is your time. You install, secure and maintain it, and team features are not confirmed. For the owner who is not an engineer, our managed vs DIY AI agent page covers that tradeoff, and Is Hermes Agent good for business goes deeper.
When Grok Bot is the better choice
- You want it running today with no servers to patch.
- You already pay for Cursor or SuperGrok, so the Bot adds little cost.
- You have a small team and want one shared Team Bot with separate memories per person.
- You want enterprise controls such as audit logs and admin group access, which Cursor documents for Enterprise.
The cost is dependence. It is a beta, the weekly usage allowance is unpublished, you cannot pick a model, and xAI says all of your Bots share one cloud computer that should not be treated as a security boundary. Read Is Grok Bot good for business for the full list.
What the price tags leave out
A free license is not a free system. A self-hosted Hermes setup has a server bill, model fees, and the hours it takes to install, connect, secure and update it. If you value your time at anything, count those hours.
A bundled Grok Bot has the opposite problem: the price is clear, but the limit is not. The weekly allowance is unpublished, extra use can bill on demand, and the plan that includes it was changed three times in August 2026. Budget both with a one-week trial rather than a spec sheet. The wider cost picture is in hidden costs of DIY AI agents.
Security and data: different shapes of risk
With Hermes Agent, your risk is operational. Whatever you configure is what runs, so credentials, network exposure and updates are yours. Data handling depends on the model provider you connect.
With Grok Bot, your risk is vendor-shaped. xAI documents that training opt-out follows your Cursor account and privacy settings, without stating the default, and no SOC 2, HIPAA or BAA claim is published for Grok Bot specifically. Neither product publishes HIPAA support in the sources we checked.
A third path: managed
If both options feel like jobs you do not want, Oraculo is the managed alternative. An engineer connects your tools with you in four 1-hour Zoom sessions, and the employee answers and places calls on your business line, texts, follows up on leads and reports to you on WhatsApp, iMessage, Slack, Telegram or email.
Starter is $12 per hour with a 6-hour weekly minimum, about $312 per month, with $499 setup and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Book a 20-minute demo to compare it against your self-hosted or bundled setup.
Key takeaway
Choose Hermes Agent for control and zero license fees if you are comfortable running it. Choose Grok Bot for convenience if you already pay for Cursor or SuperGrok. Choose managed if you want neither job.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hermes Agent really free?
The software is free and open source under the MIT license. You still pay for hosting and for model use, and Nous Portal is a separate paid subscription for models and tools. A hosted Hermes service from Nous is not confirmed.
Which is easier to set up, Hermes Agent or Grok Bot?
Grok Bot is easier: you sign in with a Cursor account and get a cloud computer. Hermes Agent needs you to install and maintain it on your own machine or server, which suits technical users.
Does Hermes Agent work on WhatsApp?
Its messaging gateway lists WhatsApp along with Telegram, Discord, Slack, Signal, email and CLI. For Grok Bot, WhatsApp is not confirmed as of October 2026.
Can either answer my business phone?
Neither has confirmed it. Hermes lists voice-memo transcription and text-to-speech, not phone calling, and Grok Bot's app has voice chat but no published business-line feature.
Which is better for a small team?
Grok Bot publishes more team features, including Team Bots in public beta. Hermes Agent's team features are not confirmed and rely on you managing access. A managed employee such as Oraculo gives a team one shared memory and a Slack account manager on Business.
