Short answer
Claude Cowork is available now inside paid Claude plans and focuses on finished files from multi-step tasks. Microsoft Copilot Autopilot, formerly Scout, is an always-on teammate agent for Microsoft 365 organizations that was only expanding to private preview in late September 2026, with no general availability date or published price. Neither has a confirmed phone line.
Personal work agent vs tenant-based teammate
These two products are often placed side by side because both are described as agents that do work instead of answering questions. They are built on different assumptions.
Claude Cowork starts with a person. You sign in with a Claude plan, connect folders and apps, and delegate multi-step tasks that end in a spreadsheet, deck or document. Copilot Autopilot starts with an organization. You give it a name, role and goal, and it lives in your Microsoft 365 tenant with its own identity in Microsoft Entra ID, memory, computer and workspace, under admin permissions, audit and governance.

Availability is the biggest difference today
You can buy a Claude Pro plan this afternoon and try Cowork. Autopilot is a different story: Microsoft's own post of September 25, 2026 describes it as your digital teammate, but access is limited to private preview, and mailbox and calendar access is limited to Frontier preview tenants. A small business that wants to start this week cannot plan around it.
Microsoft's redesigned Copilot app also has a mode that delegates tasks and is itself called Cowork, next to Home, Code and Autopilot. That naming overlap is easy to trip over: Microsoft's Cowork mode is part of Copilot, not the Anthropic product.
Governance: where Autopilot is aiming
Autopilot's pitch is control. A named agent with its own identity can be given permissions, audited and governed like an employee account, which is attractive to IT teams that already manage Microsoft 365. Cowork offers Team and Enterprise admin controls for web search, Claude in Chrome, auto-approve availability and connector approvals, but its sessions are personal and cannot be shared between users, although artifacts can.
If your priority is an agent that the whole company can @mention in a channel, Autopilot is designed for that, once you can get access. If you want something an individual can start using today, Cowork is further along.
Cost clarity
Cowork's cost is the plan you already pay for, with agent tasks drawing more of the usage allowance than chat does. Autopilot's cost is unknown. Microsoft says Cowork, Code and Autopilot use usage-based billing in Copilot Credits, and for context only, third-party guides list Microsoft 365 Copilot Business at $21 per user a month on annual terms. Do not budget from that figure, because it is not the price of Autopilot.
Who should pick which
- Choose Cowork if you want to start now, you are small, or your files and decks matter more than channel conversations.
- Wait for Autopilot if you are a Microsoft 365 organization with an IT owner, and a governed teammate in Teams and Outlook is the goal.
- Use neither as a phone line. Calls and chat apps like WhatsApp are not confirmed for either.

The option neither of them is
Oraculo is a managed AI employee for businesses that want results without administering an agent. It answers and places calls on your business line, follows up with leads, works your CRM and tracks your staff's goals, and you talk to it on WhatsApp, iMessage, Slack, Telegram, email or its app. With an engineer on Zoom, you connect your tools in a $499 one-time setup of four 1-hour Zoom sessions. Starter is $12/hour of work (6-hour weekly minimum, about $312/month) and Business is $8/hour (43-hour weekly minimum, about $1,500/month). Book a 20-minute demo to see it live.
Key takeaway
Cowork is usable today for individuals and small teams; Autopilot is a governed Microsoft 365 teammate that is still in preview. Pick by availability and tenant, and look elsewhere for phone and chat-app work.
Frequently asked questions
Is Copilot Autopilot available to buy?
Not generally. As of October 2026 Autopilot is expanding to private preview, with mailbox and calendar access limited to Frontier preview tenants and no general availability date announced. Price is not published.
What was Copilot Autopilot called before?
It was introduced at Microsoft Build on June 2, 2026 as Scout. Microsoft's September 25, 2026 post says Autopilot, previously called Scout, is your digital teammate.
Is Claude Cowork the same as Microsoft's Cowork mode?
No. Claude Cowork is Anthropic's product. Microsoft's redesigned Copilot app includes its own mode for delegating tasks alongside Home, Code and Autopilot. The naming overlap is confusing, so check which vendor a page means.
Which is better for a small business without Microsoft 365?
Autopilot is built for organizations on Microsoft 365, so it is not aimed at businesses outside that tenant model. Cowork works from a Claude plan and does not require Microsoft.
Can either answer phone calls?
Phone calls are not confirmed for either product as of October 2026. For a business phone line, use a call service or a managed AI employee that includes calling.
