Short answer
Gemini Spark is Google's 24/7 cloud agent for US Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, strongest across Gmail, Calendar and Drive. Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agent mode in paid Claude plans, strongest at spreadsheets with working formulas, decks and documents. As of October 2026, neither has a confirmed phone line, and Spark excludes the EEA and UK.
Same category, different centers of gravity
Spark and Cowork both let an AI take on multi-step work instead of answering one question at a time. They differ in where the work lives. Spark is built around Google's apps and runs continuously in Google's cloud. Cowork is built around files, connectors and a browser, and brings Claude Code's agent abilities to non-coding work.
If your business spends its day in Gmail, Calendar and Drive, Spark will feel native. If your output is a financial model or a client deck, Cowork will feel more capable.

Where Spark pulls ahead
Spark's biggest advantage is that it never needs your laptop. It works across Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar and Drive, can use sub-agents, and reacts to events such as a flight delay. Reportedly each user gets a dedicated Gmail address, so you can CC it on a thread like a colleague. It also asks before spending money or sending email, which is a sensible default.
For a US owner on Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month, that is a lot of agent for the price. The catch is geographic and organizational: no EEA, UK, Switzerland or Nigeria, and unconfirmed team features.
Where Cowork pulls ahead
Cowork's advantage is the quality of finished work products. Excel files with working formulas and PowerPoint decks are the headline, along with formatted documents and a Chrome side panel on Max and Team. It is not locked to a productivity suite, so it suits a company on Microsoft 365, Google or a mix.
Its limits are usage and sharing. Agent tasks use more of your plan allowance than chat, local file and browser work need the desktop app open, and sessions cannot be shared between users, although artifacts can. A fuller view is in Is Claude Cowork good for small business?
Which one for which business
- Solo US owner on Google Workspace: Spark.
- Finance, consulting or ops role that lives in spreadsheets and decks: Cowork.
- Company outside the US, EEA or UK exclusions: Cowork has no such regional exclusion in the sources we checked, but confirm availability for your country.
- Team that needs shared access: neither is a clean answer yet. Check admin features for your plan.

What neither one covers
Neither confirms a business phone line, and neither is a managed service. Oraculo is built for that part: it answers and places calls on your business line, texts, follows up with leads, works your CRM and tracks your team, and works with Gmail and Google Calendar as easily as with Outlook. You reach it on WhatsApp, iMessage, Slack, Telegram, email or its app.
An engineer links your tools while you watch and decide during four 1-hour Zoom sessions that make up the $499 setup. Starter bills $12 per hour of work, 6 hours a week at least (about $312/month), while Business bills $8 per hour of work, 43 hours a week at least (about $1,500/month), calls are $0.19/minute, and a 30-day money-back guarantee applies. Book a 20-minute demo to see it.
Key takeaway
Spark suits US Google users who want something running overnight; Cowork suits file-heavy work on any stack. Add a phone-and-chat layer if customers need to reach you.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Gemini Spark or Claude Cowork?
Spark is better for US Google users who want an agent working 24/7 across Gmail and Calendar. Cowork is better for spreadsheets, decks and documents. Neither is confirmed to answer a business phone.
Is Spark cheaper than Cowork?
Both ride on subscriptions. Spark comes with Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month in the US, while Cowork is included in paid Claude plans from Pro at $20/month. Ultra and Max tiers cost more and change often.
Can Cowork run all day like Spark?
Cowork's cloud and scheduled tasks run on Anthropic's servers without your computer awake. Local file, browser and computer use need the desktop app open. Spark is described as 24/7 in Google's cloud.
Which has better data protections?
Anthropic lists training as none by default on Team and Enterprise, and opt-out on Free, Pro and Max. Google has not published a Spark-specific training policy; its general Gemini Apps policy allows human review unless activity is turned off.
Can either work in WhatsApp?
WhatsApp is not listed for either. Spark's texting was announced as coming, and Cowork's help page lists no chat-app channels. A managed AI employee like Oraculo is reachable on WhatsApp, iMessage, Slack and Telegram.
