Short answer
Both come from OpenAI, but they work differently. ChatGPT Work is a task-based agent mode, launched in July 2026, that produces documents, spreadsheets and slides. Dots, launched September 29, 2026, are always-on agents with their own cloud computer that pursue goals between conversations. Dots are seat-gated, while Work is reported on every plan.
One company, two shapes of agent
OpenAI now sells two agent experiences inside ChatGPT, and the names make them sound interchangeable. They are not. ChatGPT Work is something you start: you describe a job, it works across your connected apps and files, and it returns a finished document, spreadsheet, slide deck, report or web app.
A dot is something you keep. Each dot has its own cloud computer and browser, works toward goals between conversations, learns preferences from your feedback and returns with results or decisions. One is a project tool, the other is closer to a standing assistant.

How their usage interacts
There is a detail that surprises people. According to The Next Web, conversations with a dot do not count toward your ChatGPT usage limits, but tasks the dot starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work do. In other words, a dot can hand real work to ChatGPT Work, and that work is metered.
So the two are not rivals inside OpenAI's lineup so much as layers. Dots can be the always-on coordinator, and Work is one of the engines that does heavy lifting. Budget for both if you plan to lean on a dot for production-style tasks.
Which one fits which business job
- Monthly board pack or client report: ChatGPT Work. You want a finished file, on demand or on a schedule.
- Keeping an eye on a shared pipeline: a dot. It can keep working toward the goal between your chats.
- A quick landing page or internal tool: ChatGPT Work with Sites (public beta).
- A standing helper that learns your preferences: a dot.
A dot with its own identity for one specific job, meant for companies, is only in enterprise pilots with OpenAI engineers. Microsoft is working to manage them through Agent 365.
A simple way to choose between them
Ask whether the job has an end. A quarterly report has an end: the file is delivered and the task is done. Watching a sales inbox does not: it continues every day, and a good result is something noticed and handled at 3 am. Jobs with an end suit ChatGPT Work. Jobs that never end are what Dots were designed for.
If you are unsure, start with ChatGPT Work because the trial is cheaper and the output is easy to judge. Move to a dot once you find yourself re-running the same task every day and wishing it just happened by itself.
Safety and data
OpenAI describes several guardrails for dots: idle-time proactive research uses read-only app access, an auto-review step checks actions that could affect accounts or share information, sensitive tasks such as changing a password stay with you, and a monitor can pause or stop a dot. OpenAI also says dots can still make mistakes. ChatGPT Work offers Enterprise and Edu admin controls for access, connected tools, browser use, sensitive actions and spend limits, plus a Compliance API.
For ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu, OpenAI does not train on business data by default.
Where a managed employee changes the picture
Neither OpenAI product is confirmed to answer a business phone line, and neither comes with a person to set it up. Oraculo is a managed AI employee: it answers and places calls on your business line, follows up with leads, works your CRM and tracks your team, and an engineer connects your tools in four 1-hour Zoom sessions ($499 one-time). Starter is $12/hour of work (6-hour weekly minimum, about $312/month) and Business is $8/hour (43-hour weekly minimum, about $1,500/month).

Key takeaway
Use ChatGPT Work for finished files and Dots for ongoing, goal-driven help. Neither is confirmed to cover a business phone line or come with managed setup.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between Dots and ChatGPT Work?
ChatGPT Work is a task-based agent mode that returns finished files. Dots are always-on agents with their own cloud computer that pursue goals between conversations. Work is something you start, and a dot is something you keep.
Which is available to more people?
ChatGPT Work is reported on every plan including Free, with usage metering. The first dot is included only with ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium seats, with an admin-enabled beta for Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces.
Do Dots count toward my ChatGPT usage limits?
According to The Next Web, conversations with a dot do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits, but tasks it starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work do. Check OpenAI's current limits for your plan.
Can either one answer my phone?
Neither is confirmed to answer a business phone line as of October 2026. You can voice-chat with your own dot in ChatGPT, which is a different thing from callers reaching your number.
Should I use both?
Possibly. A dot can run in the background and hand heavier jobs to ChatGPT Work, though those tasks are metered. Start with the one that matches your main need: finished files or ongoing goals.
